Wrong-way crash in Boone County claims one life

Early Sunday morning, at 3:49 a.m., Indiana State Police responded to a two vehicle crash on I-465 SB at the 24.4 mm in Boone County that killed one man.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a male was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix north in the south bound lanes of I-465 at the 24.4 mm. Nathaniel Mahoney, 30, of Washington was operating a 2004 Lincoln SUV south bound at the same location. The vehicles struck nearly head on in the middle of the three lane interstate. The Pontiac spun around and remained on the interstate facing south. The SUV came to rest down a grass embankment in the median.

The deceased was identified as Carlos Cavazos Jr. 31, of Washington, Ind.

Three passengers in the SUV and one passenger in the Pontiac were transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Cavazos was pronounced dead at the scene by the Boone County Coroner’s Office.

 Indiana State Police report open alcohol beverage containers were found in the Pontiac.
