Tips for a successful graduation celebration

It’s graduation time again. Whether you have a high school or college graduate (and this year I have one of each), a special day to celebrate their accomplishments is always in order. After deciding whether to have a gathering at a restaurant, park, rental hall or at home, and then choosing the day and time, what else should you do? Here are a few tips to help you organize a wonderful day for your special graduate.

Decorations: The main goal here is to choose a theme to tie everything together. School colors are always a popular theme; however, choosing a favorite activity, club or future career is also creative. Of course there are the standard balloons and streamers, but decorating tables with flowers in the school colors, centerpieces that are theme-based and candy dishes make the tables pretty. Choose candy that matches your theme. For example, school colors for Lebanon could be yellow Lemonheads and black licorice bites in the dishes. You can also order special colors of M&M’s, jelly beans and Skittles from the company websites. Make sure to put photos of your grad around the room, showing the different stages of learning. How about a guessing game of photos from different grades with a little folded paper on the bottom the guesser can open to see the correct answer? Put a graduation photo on a large poster board and place it by the entrance with a pen (or school-color pens) for people to leave messages to the grad as they enter or exit.

Entertainment: Depending on your location, you can choose from activities to bring some fun. DJs can be used for music and dancing at any locale (or a stereo tuned to a favorite station). If you have outside accessibility, setting up a volleyball net, croquet, corn hole, horseshoes or ladder ball games bring a lot of fun and laughs. Of course you can get fancy and order a bouncy house or dunk tank (this one was a huge favorite for my son’s open house). If it is a big sports weekend, having a TV handy for sports fanatics isn’t a bad idea either. If you have a tech savvy person, have them create a DVD of pictures and your grad’s favorite songs. This can be looped to play over and over on a TV by the displays or where you are serving food.
