Woman rescued after being shot, held for 2 days

BARTLEY, W. Va. — A West Virginia woman who had allegedly been beaten, shot and held against her will for two days by her husband managed to call 911 Wednesday afternoon in time for sheriff’s deputies to rescue her and arrest her husband.

Daren Eugene Wood, 48, of Bartley, W. Va., was charged with wanton endangerment, malicious wounding, domestic battery, domestic assault and brandishing, according to Sgt. James E. Muncy of the McDowell County (W. Va.) Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, a 44-year-old female whose name is being withheld, was able to use a telephone on Wednesday to contact authorities without her husband’s knowledge, according to the sheriff’s office.

“I was amazed she was still alive when we got there,” Muncy said. The victim was taken to a hospital where she was treated for a gunshot wound to her leg, as well as bruising to her face.

“Her injuries are not life-threatening,” Muncy said.

Deputies said Wood has had previous run-ins with law enforcement.

“We have responded to other incidents involving Mr. Wood in the past, but nothing that was domestic,” Muncy said.
