Police chase ends in arrest

By Drew Stone/The Lebanon Reporter

A police chase through three counties ended in the arrest of a Thorntown man.

Matthew W. Maxwell, 24, was arrested by Thorntown Police at around 1 a.m. Tuesday on charges of resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness and possession of methamphetamine precursors. His case is in Boone County Superior Court I.

TPD Officer Frank Clark reported the pursuit began after he went to pull over Maxwell’s Buick for having a broken headlight. Upon Clark’s initiation of the traffic stop, Maxwell sped off and began throwing items out of the window.

The pursuit continued northward on U.S. 52 into Clinton County. The Buick made a sudden stop in Colfax and a woman ran out of the car before it sped off again. Clark said police later found the woman and “charges could be pending.”

Clark reported Maxwell reached speeds of 100 mph as he continued to flee from police onto Indiana 47 into Montgomery County. At the intersection of Ind. 47 and County Road 275 East, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department set up a stop stick.

As Maxwell neared the area, Clark reported, he came to a stop and surrendered to police.

Inside the Buick, and on the road, were methamphetamine precursors. Maxwell was arrested without further incident.

Also assisting in the chase were the Boone and Clinton County sheriffs departments.
