Harris wins coroner’s race
The coroner’s office is responsible for investigating questionable deaths and identifying bodies.
Jerry Harris of Zionsville won a tight race in the primary election for the Boone County Coroner Tuesday, May 6, with 52 percent of the vote.
The coroner’s office is responsible for investigating questionable deaths and identifying bodies.
Harris’ opponent, Ronald Beck of Zionville, came in with 48 percent of the vote.
Harris thanked voters, family, and the chairman of his election committee, Mike Nielsen, and the treasurer of his committee, Jane Myers, for their support.
He attributed his win to a well-run campaign, using yard signs and advertising in local newspapers. He said he thought the race was so close because many Republicans switched to the democratic ticket to vote in the presidential primary. He added that his opponent did not run a campaign.
Beck said he was disappointed he lost and was looking forward to serving Boone County, but that he will run for coroner again. He added that Harris ran an “excellent race,” and he will support Harris in the future.
If elected in November, Harris said one of his first goals is to add deputy coroners from the west side of the county and to continue his good relationships with law enforcement, hospitals, EMS, fire departments and police.
Harris graduated Boone County Law Enforcement Academy and completed an Indiana state certified death investigator course. He has also served as Boone County Deputy Coroner for more than nine years.
