Western Boone School Board members passed several resolutions Monday, clearing the way for financing for the corporation’s proposed building project.
The first resolution was to accept a petition with at least 50 signatures of project supporters, to be given to the state. The petition accepted at a school board meeting on Monday had 105 signatures, meeting the state’s requirement.
The second resolution was to re-establish the building corporation in a way that allows it to seek financing for the project. The corporation owns the building and leases it back to the school corporation. When the building is paid off, the corporation dissolves and the facilities go to the school corporation.
The third resolution adopted the proposed lease and authorized the publication of notices for hearings prior to establishing the actual lease, which would begin in 2010 and last for 23 years. The school board will have hearings in June and July to consider year-round school as an alternative to building, as required by state law.
The board selected Kurt Adams and Clinton Taylor to represent the public and labor on the common wage committee. Making the appointments is another required step in the process to undertake a building project.
The school corporation’s $30 million project still requires state approval. The project addresses structural improvements and facility updates at all three of the corporation’s buildings.
The school board also approved textbook fees for the 2008-09 school year.
Superintendent Dr. Judi Hendrix said that the teachers worked hard to keep fees down, and that — with the exception of the cost of books for a few high school classes — the fees will be the same or even less than last year.
“I’m just real proud of our teachers,” Hendrix said.
Fees will be: K-$51; 1st-$81; 2nd-$96; 3rd-$114; 4th-$109; 5th-$101, and 6th-$96. The supply fee for preschool will be $40.
