‘Dogs, suds, socks’ to aid cancer society

By Marda Johnson/The Lebanon Reporter

Lebanon Foot-long hot dogs, root beer floats, and a live ’60s’ band will be featured at a new Boone County Cancer Society event set for June 20.

The Dogs, Suds and Socks event will be in the Memory Hall Gymnasium (the Lebanon Sports and Fitness building) from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission to the event includes a hot dog, float and bag of popcorn. Food will be served outside under tents and a sock hop will be held in the gymnasium.

“That’s the way we did it in the ‘old days,’ ” said Kathy Flanary with the Boone County Cancer Society. “We couldn’t even wear shoes in the gym.”

Those who attend will be supporting the local cancer society’s projects. While Relay for Life benefits the American Cancer Society and its efforts on a national scale, Boone County Cancer Society spends its funds in the county, helping local cancer patients cover expenses. It also provides transportation and equipment to local cancer patients undergoing treatment.

“We go on donations and a small grant from the Komen Foundation,” Flanary said. “It all stays local, it’s really grassroots.”

Flanary, a cancer survivor herself, said last year the county group provided more than $50,000 in help to more than 100 county residents.

Those who are not able to attend the sock hop but who wish to support the county cancer society may contact the Boone County Cancer Society at 482-2043 to make a donation.
