Skateboards and bluegrass at Advance
By Rod Rose/The Lebanon Reporter
Lebanon —
Music. Food. Prizes. Skateboards.
Skateboards?
All those and more will be part of the annual Labor Day Festival in Advance Saturday and Monday.
The skateboard park will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Saturday, said Advance Park Board president Vince York. There will be some giveaways, he said.
Monday, the Labor Day festival includes a parade, booths, food, games, an auction and a raffle for a Dixie Chopper riding lawn mower.
“Our hope next year is to have three days totally full of activities,” York said. The park board hopes to sponsor a concert, a three-on-three basketball tournament, a mud volleyball tournament, and corn hole and horseshoes competitions.
The skateboard equipment was donated by Gil and Julie Spear, Zionsville, York said. “They had an indoor skate park and donated it,” he said.
The park board converted the equipment for outdoor use, he said, with a plan to replace it with larger equipment in about five years.
“We want everybody from Boone County to come out,” York said.
On Saturday, a bluegrass festival will begin at 3 p.m., said co-organizer June Nickels.
Bands include Kentucky Blue, from Lexington, Ky.; The Wright Sisters, of Greenfield, and Carl Bentley and the Eagle Creek Band, Morristown. Magician David Cottrell will also perform.
“Bring your lawn chairs for a real treat of bluegrass music and a magic show that will make your feet tap, bring a smile to your face and make your heart sing,” Nickels said.
Concessions will be available from the Advance Fire Department and the Advance Community Park.
Planning for the Advance Community Park began about three years ago, York said. Construction began last summer. It includes a half-mile health trail, full-size basketball court, children’s play area, sand volleyball court, work-out equipment and a shelter house.
The board intends to add restrooms by next year, York said.
