Commissioners consider bridge repairs

By Rod Rose/The Lebanon Reporter

Lebanon Bridge repair and replacement occupied the Boone County Commissioners at a recent meeting.

Repair options for the Creek Road bridge over Sugar Creek near Thorntown should be ready for review at the commissioners’ Oct. 5 meeting, County Highway Superintendent Tom Kouns said.

Four other bridges are due for replacement, Kouns told the commissioners.

They are on: County Road 500 North west of CR 1100 East; CR 100 N west of CR 1200 E; CR 600 E just south of CR 250 N and CR 750S west of CR 75 W.

All are part of the routine rotation of bridge replacement, Kouns said, based on a 2008 county-wide inspection of bridges.

No cost has been determined, Kouns said. “It’s way too early in the ball game,” he said.

Because the bridges will be paid for with local funds, and not with federal assistance, the commissioners have more flexibility in obtaining costs.

Four more county bridges are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, Kouns said.

The Scotland Church Bridge, a stone arch structure carrying County Road 200 East over Sugar Creek, is already on the list.

Possible additions, according to a study conducted by the Indiana Department of Transportation, include:

• CR 600 E over Mounts Runn, east of Lebanon;

• CR 250 E over Browns Wonder Creek, northeast of Lebanon;

• CR 950 W over Goldsberry Creek west of Thorntown and

• O’Neal Road bridge over Big Eagle Creek near Zionsville.

Bridges are identified by number;
