Running, hiding, don't help theft suspect

LEBANON — After chasing him through two subdivisions, Lebanon police arrested suspected shoplifter Billy Joe Roberts, 29, at gunpoint — while he sat in a half-empty hot tub. Personnel from five police agencies and one fire department scoured the Park Place and Rolling Meadows subdivisions on Lebanon’s northwest side for more than an hour Thursday before a homeowner in the 2100 block of Candlestick Drive told an officer he saw something suspicious. The cover of his hot tub was askew, and there was a handkerchief in his yard, the homeowner said. He had completely covered the hot tub, and it wasn’t his handkerchief, the he said. When they uncovered the hot tub, Lebanon Police Department patrolmen T. J. Nelson and Jeff Nelson also uncovered Roberts, LPD Lt. Brent Wheat said.
