City stakes claim on sewer service; passes ordinance at meeting

---- — Lebanon Utilities now has the exclusive right to provide sewer services to residents living within a four-mile area of the city’s current boundaries. But that doesn’t mean service will be extended to this area.

The Lebanon City Council approved an ordinance on first reading at Monday’s meeting, and then on second reading at a special meeting Thursday, that gives the city this exclusive right. A recent court case in Indiana determined that a city can stake its claim in this area by the passage of an ordinance. And since the first entity to do so gets the area protected, Lebanon Mayor Huck Lewis said there could be some urgency, prompting him to hold the special meeting yesterday.
