---- — The 14th annual Judge David’s Community In-Service program will open at 8 a.m. March 12 in the Witham Health Services Pavilion at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds in Lebanon.“This year’s theme is ‘Helicopter Parenting and Overscheduled Kids…On Course for a Crash Landing?’” said Boone County Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Edens. “It will focus on the unintended consequences, both immediate and future, in the lives of our kids and families.”“We think that this year’s topic will be very thought-provoking,” Edens said.
The phrase “helicopter parent” was created in 1969 by Dr. Haim Ginott, in the book “Parents & Teenagers,” according to Kate Bayless of Parent.com.
Studies have found that parents who are too involved in the lives of their children, from elementary through college age, can cause more harm than benefit.“When children aren’t given the space to struggle through things on their own, they don’t learn to problem-solve very well,” Chris Meno, an Indiana University psychologist, said in a recent news release. “They don’t learn to be confident in their own abilities, and it can affect their self-esteem.”Keynote speaker for the in-service will be Dr. Greg Sipes, a clinical psychologist and senior partner of Indiana Health Group, Inc. Following his 9 a.m. keynote address, Sipes will moderate an 11 a.m. panel discussion that will include real-life examples of helicopter parenting and over-scheduling.
Members of Voice, a youth organization sponsored by Tobacco Free Boone County, will give a presentation at 1:30 p.m.
The in-service will conclude with presentations from several Boone County community resource organizations. Edens will speak about the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative being established here.
Pre-registration for the event ends Friday; the cost is $65. The fee includes a continental breakfast, luncheon, and access to morning and afternoon breaks.

The event was founded by Steve David when he was Boone County Circuit Court Judge. David is now an Indiana Supreme Court justice.
