Fate of Hot Pond still uncertain

The fate of Lebanon’s Hot Pond became a topic of great discussion in 2013 as lime was dredged from the pond and placed on its shore, creating a scene that looks like the surface of the moon.

The water depth in the popular fishing pond, home to Lebanon’s annual Fishing Derby, had dwindled to only one or two feet in places due to an average of 10 feet of silt that had developed and settled on the bottom. An estimate to pump the silt out reached higher than $100,000, so Parks Director John Messenger, Lebanon Fire Chief Jason Lee, and Street Superintendent Larry Lee developed an in-house option to do the work for half the cost.
