Artist shares emotional journey

Thorntown — A dream has sent one Jamestown artist on a journey that will end in Newtown, Conn., impacting several people along the way.

Mary McCartney-Jones, a resident artist at the Sugar Creek Art Center in Thorntown, has a display through the end of April that honors the 20 children who were killed in the Dec. 14, 2012, mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. The display includes a large painting of a damaged Earth in the hand of God with an angel weeping over it. The names of each of the children, and the six school staff members who died protecting them, are written on the angel’s wing. The 20 children are also memorialized in individual portraits.

“I’m a retired teacher, so kids are pretty special to me,” said Jane Johnson of the art center. “To see these kids, it just does something to you. The compassion she put into it is remarkable.”

Johnson said the art center has already received a lot of response about the display. McCartney-Jones placed a small book next to the display, asking people to share their thoughts. Entries include remarks such as: “You can see their beautiful souls through their eyes; You have captured their spirits,” “I am moved to tears,” and “You have brought the children back to life.”

McCartney-Jones never set out to create such a moving work, she said. In fact, she didn’t plan to do any of this at all.
