Students in ReadUP pilot showing improved ability

— A vast majority of third-graders in Hattie B. Stokes Elementary’s pilot ReadUP program have increased their reading abilities by at least a grade level since the beginning of the school year.

The program is a proven one for the United Way of Central Indiana, but it made its Boone County debut last fall with a pilot program at Stokes. The program pairs students with a volunteer for a half-hour of one-on-one reading time after school three days a week. Of the 22 students involved, reading assessments for 19 of them have shown the grade-level jump.

“I am so excited to learn that ReadUP is having a positive impact on the students we are serving,” said Amy Hammerle, volunteer engagement coordinator for the United Way of Boone County.
