Lebanon staff ponders curriculum questions

— Lebanon teachers and administrators are facing some frustrations surrounding curriculum and state assessments right now in the early elementary grades.

Diane Scott, director of curriculum and instruction, shared these frustrations with the Lebanon school board Tuesday. In 2010, the state of Indiana made the decision to join many other states in the country in implementing the common core standards, she said, replacing what Indiana had in place for many years, the Indiana academic standards. A transition plan was put in place when that decision was made, and students entering kindergarten in 2011 began learning under those common core standards with the intent that, when they are third-graders in the 2014-15 school year, they would take a new assessment replacing ISTEP. The state’s contract with McGraw-Hill, who created ISTEP, ends after the 2013-14 school year.

This year’s kindergarten class is also being instructed with the common core standards.
