WeBo may merge Thorntown, Wells sixth-grade teams

A plan to blend the sixth-grade volleyball and boys and girls basketball teams from Thorntown and Granville Wells elementary schools into squads at Western Boone Jr.-Sr. High School was presented to the Western Boone school board Tuesday.

Volleyball and basketball are the only sports with sixth-grade teams that compete as Thorntown and Wells, said Rick Schelsky, WeBo’s junior high athletic director.

If the plan is approved, Western Boone would field sixth-grade teams in volleyball and basketball beginning in the fall.

Rivalry between the two elementary schools carries over for some time after students become seventh-graders at WeBo, Schelsky said.
