Three Western Boone High School students won the television spot production category at this year’s Indiana Association of School Broadcasters conference and competition at the University of Indianapolis.
Their award-winning public service announcement was starkly chilling in its intensity.
Lauren Marsh, a junior, and seniors Jeremy Imes and LeeAnn Forlacher wrote, produced and filmed the 30-second PSA. Their topic was suicide prevention.
In the IASB contest, Western Boone competes heads-up against Carmel, Ben Davis, Lafayette Jeff, Pike, Westfield and other large schools, as well as two career centers in Indianapolis. Carmel this year won both the TV and radio station of the year awards.
At the conference, the names of the third- and second-place winners were announced, Marsh said. She and the others thought, ah well.
“Then they read our names,” she said. “It was overwhelming and shocking at the same time.”
