Lebanon resident returns safely from Boston

Lebanon — As she watched news reports Friday about the two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, Lebanon resident Mary McCully couldn’t imagine what Boston residents were feeling as authorities were searching house to house.

But McCully herself was close to danger as a runner in the 2013 Boston Marathon. Based on her qualification time of 4:09, she would have been right in the path of the two explosions that killed three people and injured nearly 200. But the race course has more hills than she is used to running, causing her to slow down due to pain in her knee.

“Thank goodness I had to slow down,” McCully said.

She was on mile 25 near Fenway Park when the road was blocked off and the baseball stadium evacuated.

“We weren’t sure what to do,” she said of herself and other runners left on the course at the time. She ended up going into a Barnes & Noble bookstore, where employees kept bringing the stranded runners coffee and food.

“It was tremendous how they took care of us,” she said.

Meanwhile, her husband, Mac, was a block south of the finish line in a friends and family waiting area. Mac both heard and felt the explosions.
