Applause always accompanies graduation ceremonies, but the thousands of people who jammed a humid James Rosensthil Memorial Gymnasium for Lebanon High School’s 2013 commencement Friday night saved their standing ovation for a special group of graduates: The five seniors who have either enlisted in the armed forces or enrolled in colleges with the intent to pursue a military career.
Salutatorian Kaitlyn O’Rourke addressed all of her classmates.
“I welcome you to the first night of the rest of our lives,” she said. “Your attitude is your choice, so my advice to you is choose wisely.”
Valedictorian Collin R. Campbell mixed emotion and humor in his speech.
Campbell drew an “aaawwww” from the audience when he pointed to his mother and said, “I love you.”
He also invoked laughter.
