---- — LEBANON — Nearly 100 students at Harney Elementary have signed up to do something surprising after school — run. Tracey Hammel, Harney physical education teacher, decided to start a running club after school this year. She expected maybe 30 students to join. But she was pleased to see 96 students give up after-school time to exercise. “You just don’t see this anymore,” she said Thursday afternoon, while the students ran laps around a track created by Kramer Lumber. “This is to show exercise can be fun. It’s a social thing.” There is a health-related or goal-setting lecture that starts at 4 p.m. The kids get a snack and some water, and they’re off. They run as many laps as they can in 30 minutes. For each three miles they run, or 24 laps, they get a small charm in the shape of a foot. Students running Thursday would exclaim, “two more!,” as they counted down the laps to their next charm.
