Community mourns teen

Boone County — A candlelight vigil remembered Zionsville Community High School senior Dean Barrett who died unexpectedly Wednesday.

According to a Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department press release, Barrett, 18, was spending the night with a friend in the Homeplace area of Carmel. When the friend woke up, Barrett was unresponsive and the friend drove Barrett to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis where he was pronounced dead. An investigation is ongoing and the cause of death was not released.

Carter Speer, 18, organized the vigil to honor his friend of 12 years.

“I was talking with some of our friends, and we felt that this is what Dean would have wanted,” he said. “He was always about relationships and always wanted to bring people together.”

A celebration of Barrett's life and faith will be noon Saturday at Eagle Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dean Barrett Passport Adventure Missions Scholarship Fund, c/o Old National Bank, 385 S. Main St., Zionsville, IN 46077.
