Sheriff opposes roundabout at 32 and 421

Plans by the Indiana Department of Transportation to build a roundabout at U.S. 421 and Indiana 32 have angered Boone County Sheriff Ken Campbell.

The roundabout’s “primary” purpose “is to reduce the crash rate and personal injury rate at the intersection, Amy Marlatt, an environmental scientist with American Structurepoint Inc., said in a letter to Campbell that he shared with The Lebanon Reporter.

“The need for the proposed project is a result of the high crash rate in relation to other stop-controlled intersections,” Marlatt wrote to Campbell. The roundabout would be a single lane, with a 15-feet “truck apron,” and right-hand slip ramps at the northwest and southeast sides, she said.

Campbell said the roundabout is not only a waste of money and effort, it ignores what he considers a more dangerous intersection.

A more important, and more logical, project is to make the intersection of U.S. 52 and Ind. 47 a four-way stop, Campbell said. He cited figures backing up his argument.
