Dredging of Hot Pond begins

Lebanon — No major surprises have been found at the bottom of Hot Pond – yet – said Lebanon Mayor Huck Lewis.

But stirring up the lime unexpectedly caused it to filter into Prairie Creek.

“We dealt with it as soon as we knew about it,” Lewis said.

Dredging of the pond began this week. The Lebanon City Council approved $70,000 last month to complete the work, which will alleviate many of the pond’s problems.

The dredging has caused lime particles to become suspended in water that flows from the Hot Pond Park, through a drainage pipe, into Prairie Creek near East Main Street, Lewis said. The lime in the creek was first noticed Thursday.

“We didn’t know how big a factor it was,” Lewis said.
