The gift of magic

Advance — When he was 9 years old, Blake Vogt’s parents decided to throw their son a birthday party with local magician Marc Lehmann. Vogt had seen Lehmann perform before at the Lebanon Pizza Hut, and his parents saw that he was interested in magic. Little did they know that they had just changed their son’s life forever.

“They probably thought it was harmless to do a one-hour magic show, harmless to buy me a magic kit,” Vogt, now 24, said of his parents. “But pretty much after that hour, I was done for. I was completely obsessed after that.”

Vogt went on the learn everything he could in the next few years. He followed Lehmann around religiously, he said. If Lehmann was performing at Pizza Hut in Lebanon on Wednesday, Vogt was there. If he was at the Pizza Hut in Frankfort or Zionsville, Vogt was there.

“I became that uncomfortable, annoying follower of his,” Vogt said. “And in middle school, I’d been doing it long enough he, for some reason, decided he’d mentor me.”
