Rains wreak havoc

Boone County — Heavy rain in the area Thursday night pushed Lebanon’s water treatment plant to capacity, making it impossible for some residents to flush their toilets, overflowing stormwater drains and forcing sewer water into the street in one location near Green and Pleasant streets.

“The water treatment plant is at its capacity,” Lebanon Mayor Huck Lewis said. He said that as soon as the rain stopped, utility workers would be out to clean up the problem areas. “I don’t know that we’ve ever had that happen before.”

At press time, three weather alerts from the National Weather Service were in effect for Boone County: A river flood warning through Friday; a flood advisory until 12:30 a.m. Friday; and a flash flood watch until 8 a.m. Friday.

Boone County Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Martin said the unofficial estimate is that the latest round of storms brought about 3 1/2 inches of rain to the area when the ground was already saturated, causing the risk for flooding.

“It takes about 12 hours after it stops raining before it peaks,” Martin said. He expects that could take longer this time as the entire state has been affected, so there isn’t anywhere for the water to flow to quickly.
