WeBo Voice team invited to national conference

Four Western Boone students will participate in a national conference sponsored by the American Legacy Foundation next month in Washington, D.C. Juniors Samantha Cummings, Marigrace Kochert and Ethan Zimmerman, and senior Ashley Smith are members of the Voice chapter at Western Boone. Voice is an organization for teenagers dedicated to eliminating the use of all tobacco products. Western Boone’s chapter is one of the most active in Indiana. Only eight other Voice teams in Indiana were invited to the conference, July 13 to 17. The conference theme is “Make Tobacco History.” Angie Dickerson, coordinator of Tobacco Free Boone County and the Voice “adult ally,” said the conference will provide invaluable lessons in counteracting tobacco company advertising aimed at teenagers. Smith said she hopes to learn ways to improve her ability to speak about tobacco-related issues, as does Zimmerman, who also wants to learn “to be a leader.” See Saturday's Lebanon Reporter for more on this story.
