Apparent escape attempt foiled

A young man already facing charges, including possession of heroin, is in even more trouble after allegedly faking an illness in an apparent effort to escape from the Boone County Jail where he was being held.Boone County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Chris Burcham said Bradford Boyers, 20, Zionsville, was taken to Witham Memorial Hospital’s emergency room Tuesday after he was found about 1:40 p.m. in what appeared to be an unconscious state at the jail, where he had been an inmate since Saturday.Jail staff called for a medics and Boyers was transported to Witham, accompanied in the ambulance by Boone County Corrections Officer Susan Kinney, Burcham said.Burcham said: At the hospital, Boyers appeared to be regaining consciousness, and as Kinney reached to put on latex gloves Boyer grabbed for the officer’s gun. Kinney was able to drop to the ground and roll over to keep Boyers from getting the holstered weapon, but Boyers fell onto Kinney as he continued to try to get the gun. Nurses were then able to restrain the man.Boyers was released from the hospital a short time later and returned to the Boone County Jail. Burcham said hospital staff said nothing was medically wrong with the man and they believed he had faked an illness. After the incident, Boyers was charged with resisting law enforcement, disarming a law enforcement officer, escape, battery on a law enforcement officer, and another charge of battery because a nurse was slightly injured in the struggle.Court date information on the new charges was not available at press time.Boyers was first arrested by Zionsville Police Department at about 3 a.m. Saturday on charges of possession of a syringe, criminal mischief, trafficking and possession of a narcotic drug, which Burcham said was heroin.
