Fourth-only traffic passes causing some confusion

Boone County — Confusion has developed over what was intended as a way to reduce traffic congestion as units marshal for Thursday’s Fourth of July parade in Lebanon.

Construction at Lebanon High School made it impossible for the parade to be organized there, so for the second year parade units will line up at Lebanon Middle School.

In addition, paving of LHS parking lots prevented parade organizers from using the school’s east lot as a turn-around for traffic on Grant Street, so police created a temporary one-way traffic pattern to be used before and after the parade.

After 8 a.m. Thursday, only southbound traffic will be permitted on Grant Street between Ulen Drive and Fordice Street. No parade spectators or parade entries will be allowed to go north on Grant from Fordice. About 4 p.m., when the parade is ending, Grant Street will be one-way northbound, until parade units clear the area.

In an effort to make it easier for residents of that area, their guests, and visitors to Parkwood Nursing Home to go north on Grant from Fordice, police decided to issue parking passes. The passes are available at the Lebanon Police Department through 4 p.m. today.

Permits are not strictly required, Lebanon Police Lt. Brent Wheat said. They were intended to make it easier for drivers and for officers at the Grant and Fordice checkpoint.

Anyone with a permit will be waved through the checkpoint, Wheat said. Anyone without a permit must stop and explain to officers why they need to continue north.

Dozens of permits have been issued, Wheat said.

“We had to buy extra paper, which is good; it’s making people think about access on the Fourth,” he said.

Information about the parade will be updated on LPD’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/LebanonPolice
