LCSC looks to hire new athletic trainer

---- — The Lebanon Community School Corp. is working on a contract with IU Health Methodist to supply Lebanon High School with a full-time athletic trainer.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor brought up the possibility to the school board at Tuesday’s meeting. With Athletic Director Phil Levine, Taylor looked at three different proposals from IU Health Methodist, St. Vincent and Witham. St. Vincent withdrew its proposal, and Taylor said that looking at the remaining two, he did not feel Witham was in their best interest.

The full-time position would pay $50,000, but IU Health would pick up half of that cost. They will also provide LCSC an annual stipend of $9,000 to use in support of the athletic programs, such as supplies.

IU Health has been working with LCSC, providing a part-time trainer for $8,000 a year. This full-time position would replace the part-time one. The corporation would receive all of the same benefits as last year, Levine said, like a physician at some games.

“All the existing things we’ve been doing will still be available to us,” Levine said. “There will be no changes, but they would provide additional services we can use.”

The trainer could get involved in the new weight room and provide clinics on Saturdays when possible, Levine said.

“They’ve met with us three times, and each time they’ve been very positive, very pro-Lebanon,” Taylor said. “I have a feeling they really want to be here.”

The trainer would be present at all home athletic games, and additionally, all away varsity football games. He or she would also provide some coverage at middle school games.

Taylor did not have the final contract available, but the board approved his recommendation to work toward a contract. It will be a 10-year contract, but either side can opt out with a 60-day notice.

The board also approved reducing the appropriations for the transportation operation fund by $500,000. As of June 30, 41 percent of the fund had been expended. Since 2009, the largest percentage of the fund expended by the same date was 42.7 percent in 2012. Charles Tait, business manager and assistant superintendent, said the full appropriation was simply not needed.

Taylor also announced a couple of personnel changes. Kari Ottinger, assistant principal at LHS, will become the new corporation assessment director, replacing the retiring Will Pullins. And Mary Dickerson, assistant principal at Central and Perry-Worth elementary schools, will replace Ottinger as an LHS assistant principal.

“These are two outstanding individuals who have proven themselves in a number of different administrative roles and responsibilities,” Taylor said. “You’ll be a true asset overall to LCSC, and I’m very excited to have both of you on board. I can say you’ll be going from the frying pan to the fire, but I hope it’s a good fire.”
