Cavender, Toole and Olson take grand honors at 4-H rabbit show

The noise of blowing fans filled the rabbit and poultry building at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds Friday as 4-Hers tried to beat the heat during the rabbit show.

Large fans around the building were on, and miniature fans were placed inside the rabbit cages to keep the animals cool. Some cages even had frozen bottles of water for the rabbits.

Autum Cavender was named the grand champion of the 6 class, or commercial rabbits, at the show. Tyler Olson was the reserve grand champion.

Camren Toole was surprised to be named the grand champion of the 4 class or fancy rabbits. Madison Juillerat was the reserve grand champion.

Olson was also named grand champion of meat pen rabbits.

Justin and Danielle Lowe, of northern Indiana, served as judges for the show. Danielle said all of the 4-Hers did a great job.

“The rabbits were in really good condition, pretty good quality from top to bottom,” she said. “We both had a great time.”

Project leader Beth Juillerat said both judges were very precise, “which is just great.” There were 323 rabbits in the show this year, comparable to last year. About the same number of 4-Hers also participated.

“We lost some 10-year members last year, but we got a whole lot of new ones this year,” Juillerat said, “which is very exciting.”
