Honoring those who served

Lebanon — World War II veteran Herschel Lewis speaks in the Boone County Courthouse Rotunda. Lewis, a native of Boone County, was the keynote speaker for the county’s Veteran’s Day program. He spoke about coming to the courthouse on his 18th birthday to register for the draft, memories from the war and how Americans should honor all veterans including those who lost their life. “Every veteran deserves an emphatic welcome home,” he said. “Sadly that is not the case.” Lewis admitted he was dumbfounded he was asked to speak during the event. “One of the requirements was to be a veteran of World War II,” he said. “I realized that I was a member of a vast, vanishing breed.”
