Two women die in Zionsville crash

Zionsville — An accident apparently caused when a wheel came off of a vehicle claimed the lives of two women Tuesday afternoon.

Zionsville Police Department released the names of the victims Tuesday evening. They are Mika J. Baird, 30, and Lesley Martinez, 31, both of Indianapolis.

According to the ZPD press release, the accident occurred just before 1 p.m. Tuesday at 96th Street west of Zionsville Road. After losing the right rear wheel, a 2000 Ford Explorer spun and crossed the center line and struck a westbound Geo Prism driven by Laura Wilmot, 32, of Zionsville. After striking the Geo, the Explorer came to rest on its roof on the grass on the north side of 96th Street.ZPD and Zionsville Fire Department responded to the scene, where the two women were trapped and unconscious in the inverted Explorer. The fire department was able to quickly extricate Martinez, the passenger, but advanced life-support that was performed was not successful. The driver, Baird, was pronounced dead inside the vehicle.

The driver of the Geo, 32-year-old Laura Wilmot, Zionsville, was uninjured. All three women had been wearing seat belts, according to the police report.

The crash is being investigated by the Boone County Serious Bodily Injury Crash Team, with officers from ZPD, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the Lebanon Police Department, the Whitestown Police Department and Indiana Excise Police.
