VIDEO: 'Happy' Arc video honors retired director

A viral video created by The Arc of Greater Boone County is spreading across the community, showing people how “happy” the Arc’s clients are for recently retired executive director Brent Cardin’s 22 years of service.

The video tribute, set to Pharrell Williams’ hit song “Happy,” was put together to honor Cardin, who retired in March from the organization that helps provide opportunities to persons with disabilities. Tracy Autrey, The Arc’s adult services manager, wanted the video to be a tribute to Cardin because he gave Autrey her first job opportunity after college nearly 22 years ago.“I thought I owed this to him,” she said. “He’s my mentor and got me to where I am today.”Autrey and Trevor Davids, Arc’s community connection specialist, decided to start filming at locations where Arc and its clients are involved. And it started to take off, Autrey said. It really got big when Mike Nielsen, from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, came over with a couple of officer’s vehicles.“Everyone was hugging him,” Autrey said. “It was like Santa Claus was here.”Whenever Autrey and Davids approached people, asking if they wanted to be involved in a video tribute to Cardin, they said yes.“Everyone in the community knows Brent,” Autrey said.

“The community just embraced this, not only for the participants, but for Brent.”But the clients who participated, and often danced, in the video had a great time, Autrey said. Teresa Ferrell got to film a shot outside of Lebanon High School, from where her brother and Autrey, her favorite Arc staff member, both graduated.“Go tigers and good luck Brent,” Ferrell said. “I’m glad you liked our video. You are our friend forever.”Jimmy Gamble was able to show off his drumming skills in the video. He said he liked being in a video with his good friends and for Cardin. Brad Lanpher was in the video with his van driver, Ed Moffitt. “We are movie stars,” Lanpher said.
