Doug Akers to conclude 34-year career this July

Boone County — Doug Akers will this July retire as a Purdue Extension Educator for Boone County, concluding a 34-year career with Purdue, 30 of them here.

“I’m still going to do volunteer work, including the Boone County 4-H poultry project,” Akers said Monday in his office, where poultry show ribbons and trophies mingle with plaques honoring his achievements, and a miniature bale of hay. A strip of wall paper in Purdue’s colors adorns the office ceiling.

Travel, from a nearly year-round home in Gulf Shores, Ala.; attending to his business selling exhibition poultry; volunteering with poultry shows here and in Alabama; and continuing an interest in gardening will occupy his time after his July 31 retirement.

His interest in poultry goes back to childhood.

“When I was a kid on Grandma and Grandpa’s farm, I would help gather eggs,” he said. For a while he raised ducks, but never entered them in exhibitions.
