LHS students learn about dangers of drunken driving

Lebanon — Lebanon High School students learned about the dangers of drunken driving in a real and personal way Thursday as the “Every 15 Minutes” program came to the Lebanon Middle School campus.

The two-day program challenges students to think about drinking, personal safety and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved. The name of the program is derived from the fact that every 15 minutes, someone in the United States dies in an alcohol-related traffic collision.

Yesterday, on the first day of the program, one student was removed from class every 15 minutes by a grim reaper character. A police officer read an obituary written by the “dead” student’s parents, explaining the circumstances of the student’s death. The student then returned as the “living dead,” in full face make-up, a black grim reaper T-shirt, and wearing a coroner’s tag. These students were not allowed to speak or interact with other students for the remainder of the day.
