Council approves fund transfer for jail maintenance

---- — More than $101,000 is needed to make repairs to the two-decade-old Boone County Jail.

Damage from sump pump backups during a mid-April rainstorm caused more than $46,000 in damage in the jail’s basement; insurance covered only a $3,200 loss in ammunition, Boone County Sheriff’s Office Major Mike Nielsen said at Tuesday’s Boone County Council meeting.

There is no flood insurance on the jail, because it is “prohibitively expensive,” Nielsen said. One policy the BCSO had considered had a $50,000 deductible, he said.
