Pumping station boosts water supply

Whitestown’s water supply can now meet the needs of up to 20,000 residents, as well as industrial, commercial and retail users.

Town Council member Susan Austin twisted a switch Tuesday morning to start one of three 2,000-gallon-per-minute pumps, inaugurating the town’s pumping station on Indianapolis Road about a mile south of Whitestown Parkway (old Ind. 334).

“It’s been a long time in coming,” Austin said. “Let’s turn the water on.” Within minutes, more than 1,000 gallons of water per minute — less than a sixth of the system’s potential volume — were being distributed by the system, designed and built by Engineered Fluid Inc., Centralia, Ill.

Citizens Energy Group will provide Whitestown with up to four million gallons of water a day, well under the six-million-gallon-per-day capacity of the enhanced system.

The pumping station gives Whitestown “total redundancy” for its water supply, because the town now has two links to Citizens Energy Group. The station will also supply a 2-million gallon water tower planned near the intersection of Indiana 267 and Indianapolis Road.

Initially, the pump station will provide up to two million gallons a day, serving all of Whitestown, the Royal Run subdivision and areas of the Stonegate subdivision, north of West Oak Street in Zionsville.
