Flooding destroys Boone County Toy Drive’s stockpile

Boone County — Toys, books and other items valued between $15,000 and $20,000, destined to be distributed to area children, were destroyed by last week’s flood, said Myrtle Bailey, director of the Boone County Toy Drive.

Bailey’s home in the 400 block of Fordice Street is within feet of Prairie Creek, which overflowed on the night of April 18-19, in the worst flooding for which accurate records are available.

The toy drive, which has been held for 35 years, gathers new and “gently used” toys for children up to age 12. Items are collected at fire stations in Lebanon and Zionsville, through area businesses in Jamestown, and at Bailey’s home. Clothing, food and financial donations are also collected; Bailey said she spends between $3,000 and $5,000 of her own money on the project each year.
