Community responds to needs of victims of Friday’s rural fire

Boone County — Although it remains under investigation, the cause of a Friday afternoon fire that destroyed a rural northern Boone County home may never be determined, Lebanon Fire Department Battalion and Investigations Division Chief Robert Wirey said.

Because the first call to 9-1-1 gave an incorrect address, fire crews arrived 10 to 12 minutes behind what should have been a 10-minute run. The home, at 2995 E. CR 850 N, was occupied by a single mother, her 15-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter. The home was not insured.

The family was at the son’s soccer game in Indianapolis when the fire started, said Kris Shallenberger, who with Angie Morton has initiated a social-media-based campaign to help the victims.
