Local disaster response groups organize

Persons who are not already members of disaster response groups are invited to join United Way of Central Indiana in creating a “volunteer reception center” that will be activated when necessary in Boone and five other central Indiana counties.

“We’ve all seen stories in the media about entire schools, churches and other civic groups who are inspired to show up after a disaster with their tools and their best intentions to help their neighbors rebuild,” said Alan Witchey, United Way’s Volunteer Center director.

United Way will offer “reservist” training from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 24 at the agency’s headquarters, 3901 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. As of 5:55 p.m. Wednesday, there were openings for another 26 volunteers.
