Veterans Day celebrations planned by schools, veterans’ groups

Boone County — Veterans Day will be celebrated in a variety of ways this weekend and early next week.

The Lebanon VFW Post No. 901 and the Ladies Auxiliary will conduct a Veterans Day Program at the Lebanon Memorial Park Veterans Monument at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The program is expected to last about 45 minutes. Alan Andrews will be the guest speaker.

Lebanon High School will be holding its annual Veterans Day program on Monday. The students and staff at Lebanon High School are inviting local veterans to attend the program in recognition of the service they provided to the country. Veterans should arrive at Lebanon High School by 10:15 a.m. Enter through the athletic entrance directly north of the main entrance. The program is from 10:30 to 11:10 a.m., followed by a reception for local veterans from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.

Several area elementary schools also have plans for programs Friday or Monday.

The Lebanon Public Library will host its annual Veterans program on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in conjunction with the War Years Roundtable.

The program will take place in the top floor meeting room.

Raymond Miller, World War II veteran, will share his experiences as a B-17 Bomber pilot who joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. After an October 1944 arrival in England, he began flying bombing missions over Germany. He commanded a crew in aerial offensive operations and completed 22 combat missions in the European Theater of Operations in the 452nd Group, Army Bombardment, 8th Air Force.

In April 2012, Raymond Miller joined other World War II veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., and visited the World War II Memorial. For more information about the program, contact the Ralph W. Stark Heritage Center at the Lebanon Public Library 482-3460.

City and county offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Veterans Day, and meetings regularly scheduled for Monday will take place on Tuesday.
