Reward in fatal hit and run increased

Boone County — Whoever killed Anita Wernsing remains at large, but police haven’t stopped looking.

Now, a $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of that person.

The reward comes from a private donor, said Boone County Sheriff’s Office Corp. Chris Burcham. A $1,000 reward from Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana, announced on Feb. 15, remains in effect.

Wernsing, 78, died about 6 p.m. Nov. 25, 2012, when a vehicle, possibly a dark red SUV, hit her as she crossed Indiana 267 in Fayette. The suspect driver ran off the road, then continued north on Ind. 267, after hitting Wernsing.

Pieces of the vehicle were sent to the Indiana State Police lab for examination.

Wernsing was walking across the two-lane highway to her home from Mt. Tabor Primitive Baptist Church, where she was a member.

Two of three vehicles that passed through Fayette in the 30 to 60 seconds after the accident have been identified, Burcham said; the SUV was seen turning west onto CR 700 S, a few hundred feet from the crash.

“Investigators from the Boone County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team and detectives are continuing to look at every piece of evidence to determine the events of the incident,” Burcham said in a press release.

“This case continues to be a top priority for our detectives and FACT investigators,” Sheriff Ken Campbell said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at 765-482-1412 or tips@co.boone.in.us.

Wernsing, who would have been 79 next Friday, is survived by her husband, three daughters, three stepdaughters, four stepsons and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
