UPDATED: Zionsville girl dies after falling at IU

Bloomington — 2013 Zionsville Community High School graduate Rachael Fiege died this morning after falling down a basement staircase at a North Park Avenue home near the Indiana University campus early Friday morning.

Fiege, 19, died at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where she had been on life support and listed in critical condition on Friday.

University officials received word of Fiege’s death at 8:06 a.m., according to IU interim police chief Laury Flint.

Fiege was a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, where she played soccer.

She arrived on campus on Monday and planned to enter IU’s pre-nursing program.

"This is a tragedy that breaks every heart in the IU community," Flint said, in a news release. "Our deepest sympathies go out to Rachael's family and friends."

Fiege was visiting friends at the house when she fell down the stairs.

The 19-year-old was found in a semi-conscious state at the bottom of basement stairs at 817 N. Park Ave. sometime between 1 and 2 a.m. by other people in the house. Fiege was moved off the floor and to another room, laid down, and monitored periodically throughout the morning, police were told.

Flint said Friday the student suffered head injuries, and the people in house did not understand the severity of the her injuries.

Emergency responders were called at 7:48 a.m., when Fiege was found unresponsive. IU police arrived within three minutes, and an ambulance arrived within four minutes of that call for help.

IU police continue to investigate Friday morning's incident and spent Friday interviewing the 817 N. Park Ave. residents, Fiege's roommate and others at the house.

No arrests have been made.
"And I don't anticipate criminal charges being filed in this case, at least not at this time," Flint said this morning.

Staff writer Rachel Bunn contributed to this story.
