Wider Zionsville Road on the drawing board

Zionsville Road from the Boone-Marion County line to 86th Street could be widened to four lanes in the next five years, with engineering costs being paid by the Boone Redevelopment Commission. West 96th St. could also be widened from the Zionsville Road intersection east to the Hamilton County line. Tom Lingafelter, president of the Boone RDC, described the plan during the board’s meeting Friday in Lebanon. Zionsville Road is heavily used by commuters seeking to avoid U.S. 421 and area interstates. The 96th Street intersection carries more traffic than it was designed to handle, Lingafelter said. Indianapolis won’t have funding to widen Zionsville Road for another five years, Lingafelter said. If the project qualifies for federal funding, however, state and federal money could cover 80 percent of the cost, with local agencies picking up the balance. About half of the 96th Street/Zionsville Road intersection is in a TIF — tax increment financing — district, Lingafelter said. That would allow the RDC to appropriate money to pay for engineering for the improved intersection. A discussion of the proposal could be on the RDC’s October agenda.
