Lebanon may explore 'bicycle friendly' status

Charlie Campbell, director of Lebanon’s planning and zoning administration department, is enthused over the multiple benefits the city could realize from becoming bicycle friendly. Eight Indiana cities have been designated as “bicycle friendly,” and some local cyclists join Campbell in seeing no reason why Lebanon can’t achieve that same recognition. The designation, presented by the League of American Bicyclists, is based on “Five E’s”: Engineering: Creating safe and convenient places to ride and park; Education: Giving people of all ages and abilities the skills and confidence to ride; Encouragement: Creating a strong bike culture that welcomes and celebrates bicycling; Enforcement: Ensuring safe roads for all users; and Evaluation and Planning: Planning for bicycling as a safe and viable transportation option. Campbell and building inspector Derek Warren attended an Aug. 29 “Planning for a Bicycle-Friendly Community” workshop, sponsored by the Indiana State Department of Health and hosted by the city of Kokomo. Campbell recently told the city's Board of Works and Public Safety about the workshop, at which he and Warren gathered ideas for making Lebanon more bike friendly. One of the presenters, Campbell said, was Pete Fritz, a former associate of Ratio Architects and one of the authors of Lebanon’s comprehensive plan. “You can’t read many pages of Lebanon’s Comprehensive Plan without seeing the call for improved pedestrian connectivity,” Campbell said. Making a community bicycle safe, while not the same as “bicycle friendly,” can be as simple as creating bicycle lanes on streets by painting lines to designate those zones.
