Local groups prepare for ShakeOut

On the 200th anniversary of an earthquake that rang church bells in Boston and made the Mississippi River run backwards, local and state officials are hoping to raise awareness of earthquake risks by participating in the third annual Great Central U.S. ShakeOut.

Among the 39 local government agencies registered for the 10:15 a.m. Feb. 7 event are the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and the Boone County Emergency Management Agency. Zionsville Community Schools is among the 259 schools and districts in the nine states that have registered for the event.

The drill will last for five minutes, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security said in a press release. Information about the event, including registration, which is free and open to everyone, is available at www.shakeout.org/centralus/.
