Boone County — Investigators are pleading with the public for help in finding the hit-and-run driver who killed a Fayette woman who was walking across the street from her church to her home.

Anita Wernsing, 78, was fatally injured about 6 p.m. Nov. 25 as she crossed Indiana 267 from Mount Tabor Primitive Baptist Church, 7028 S. Ind. 267 to her home at 7105 S. Ind. 267. There were no witnesses to the accident; police estimate her body was found within a minute of the time she was struck.

Three cars are known to have gone south on Ind. 267 during a 30 to 60 second period after a driver who saw Wernsing in the parking lot of the church. That driver, who was lost, turned around at CR 750 S and realized the woman had been struck. The identity of that driver has not been released.
