Baldwin leaves public office

Boone County — Mary Alice “Sam” Baldwin has decided that nearly a quarter-century as an elected official is quite enough, and it’s time for two other pursuits: Sorting her holiday decorations and spoiling her two grandsons.

A surprise party honoring her retirement was held Friday morning on the second floor rotunda at the Boone County Courthouse.

It was not a complete surprise — Baldwin said she was asked to help with a pitch-in dinner, so she knew an event was planned. But she didn’t know it would be in her honor.

Asked what she would do next, Baldwin said, “The first thing I’m doing is cataloging my ornaments.” Baldwin has an extensive collection of Hallmark Christmas ornaments — so extensive she uses a software program to keep track of purchases and values.

“And I’m spending more time with my grandchildren,” who are 9 and 8, she said.

Her son, Jim, said his mother has been an elected official for more than half of his life. He met his wife, Nikki, while she was working for Baldwin.

“I’m very, very proud of what you have done; congratulations,” he said.
