---- — In what is becoming an annual occurrence, the Western Boone girls basketball team won the Sugar Creek Classic Saturday night in Crawfordsville.
The Stars pounded Southmont 62-32 to win their fifth-straight title and sixth in the last seven years.
"I am really proud of this team," Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. "This team has really become their own team and have very quickly found their identity this season. We have 10 great kids, they all get along, they love each other, we are a family, they play together, we are very balance and we have made a complete 180 with how we guard people last year 'til this year. They have all bought into it and honestly we are playing some of the best defense now since I have been here. That is a tribute to them and the mentality that they have. I couldn't be prouder of the effort we are giving on the defensive end."
Western Boone (4-0) jumped on Southmont right away, taking a 7-0 lead just 1:15 into the game and a 10-0 lead with 5:20 left in the first quarter.
After Nicole Chance put Western Boone up 12 with 3:46 left in the quarter, Southmont never got the deficit to single digits.
The lead was 14 after one and 23 at the half.
Western Boone forced 20 turnovers in the half while holding Southmont to 12 points on 5 of 19 shooting.
Schelsky said the Stars decided to change things up defensively after their opening game of the year against Lafayette Jefferson, moving to a high-octane, pressuring defense.
He said he is pleased the girls have picked it up so quickly.
"That is a tribute to them and their work ethic in practice," Schelsky said. "After the Jeff game we decided that we needed to get the game up-and-down and we needed to get after it on defense and use our athleticism. Unfortunately for the kids, that means a lot of full-court frills and running in practice. Our kids are really athletic, they like playing like that and they are hard workers. And four minutes into the game, they were huffing and puffing and we weren't. That has been the theme the last three games, we have really wore the other team down quickly. Our ability to run is going to be a big attribute."
